YOU TRULY DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU HAVE UNTIL YOU LOSE IT

Our house Thursday March 1st 2012....the worst day or our lives
 Our front door
 Kitchen
 Family Room
from the from to the back, no more walls, floor or roof

Thursday morning 12:30am, we were woken by a rattling noise at our bedroom door and the smell of smoke, we had no time to waste. We had to get out, my husband grabbed the kids, i grabbed the baby, kicked out the window and we all escaped through the bedroom window, ran to a neighbours house in nothing but pj's banging on her door begging for help. She called the fire department, they arrive 15 minutes later, but that point it was to bad to fight, they tried and after more than 3.5 hours this is what is left, we have lost everything.
Now we live in a hotel until we can find a house and begin to rebuild our lives.
Fire is the scariest thing I have ever been through, it will be hard for a long time, but the main thing is we have each other.

Simple Life?????

I suggest the question...... Are we living a simple life???? I know that is our goal as a family, that is what we work towards and hopefully have, but when I look around the house I have to ask myself .... do we have a simple life? Sometimes I easily answer yes, but other times when I am tripping over toys and clothes and "stuff" all over the house I have to wonder.
I have been purging so much lately to become more "simple" doing so has also made my life easier and more organized.... I love that!!!
There are some toys I know my kids would miss though, those are the toys that never seem to get old, the ones everyone will play with no matter what the age difference, the ones that keep them engaged and creative for hours. I have looked at those toys and realize they are the simple toys, the inexpensive toys, and the home made toys. So many people give my children gifts of toys even though we ask them not to and say they have more than enough.....( with 5 going on 6 kids  there are a lot of toys). but they just keep coming!!!!
Anyways my point is the real toys, the ones they love, are the simple ones, wood blocks, play doh, sand, pencils and paper, dress up clothes, baby dolls etc.
I want to use my kids toys as an example, simple is better, and I want to change a lot of other things to be just that... simple

Yarn Along

Joining Ginny again this week for Yarn Along

This week I am making a bear Snuggle blanket for a friend who just had a baby. I know I said that I would be making something for myself this week, but as usual that's not gonna happen!!!!
I know it doesn't look like much right now but soon it will be so cute you will be saying awww I need to make that!!!! I don't have a pattern for this I am just kind of making it up as I go, I am sure it will turn out well!! ( I hope)
I am reading a special put out by Hobby Farms this week on Chickens, another magazine loaded with information. We will be getting some new chicks this spring and I just want to brush up on some knowledge to be sure I care for them the best I can!
I will post a finished product on the snuggle blanket as soon as its done!! Cross your fingers for me.....I think I know what I am doing!!!

Valentine's Day

Happy Valentine's Day
Today is the day to express you love to one another
We live our lives doing this on a daily basis and really see no need to make a special attempt to show love....however we will use it as an excuse to bake a little more of the sweat stuff and go with a heart shaped theme!
We will be baking some cookies, and doing something special for dinner, we also give our kids a little something, I will post pictures later!!
Have a great day and don't forget to say I love you to those who deserve it!!!!

Finally Winter Showed it Face

Finally winter decided to come, IT SNOWED!!!!
We love snow, there is so much to do in it....unfortunately by the time the storm finished and we got bundled up to head outside it was to cold to stay out for long!!!!!
But it was fun no matter what!

Playing in the snow makes one little girl very sleepy!!!!!

A Weekend of Creativity

This weekend we made up for a week of illness. Everyone was sick all week and finally recovered by the weekend. We definitely made up for lost time.
We had the idea to try out candle making, it was fun and turned out well. We decided to keep our candles simple and put them in our favorite containers....Mason Jars!! Our oldest son (Mason) loves these jars because he at the ripe old age of 10 says those jars are named after him!!!!

We also tried our hand at candy making, first we tried sponge taffy, it tasted delicious but we couldn't get it out of the pan!!!  We will try that again another time
Then we made some salt water taffy, that turned out great. It was a lot of pulling and stretching but it was worth it. We had watermelon flavoring so that's what we made. You really need to try to make it some day, something about making it yourself seems to taste so much better!!!

Pictures from the candle making process.
The second picture is a re purposed container! I used an empty tuna can and shaped it into a heart, then painted it. Great Valentines gift too!!!!

Yarn Along

I am joining in with Ginny from http://www.gsheller.com/ in yarn along again this week!
After a week of making bookworms for my kids to hand out at school this Valentine's Day, I thought well they must give a little something to their teachers too.....right??? Well, came across these adorable little Apple Cozies, they stop apples from getting bumped and bruised!! They are so cute and quick and easy to make up. I have  5 of these to make and  I think I am going to make them all in nice bright spring colors. I think though these would look much nicer with some natural birch buttons from Tonya at http://plainandjoyfulliving.blogspot.com/, I just love her families creations, so natural and creative!
As I mentioned last week I love to read but am not big on books, so I cheat a bit here and put some spare time into magazines!!! This week I am reading the newest Hobby Farm Home magazine, I find all of these so full of useful knowledge that I often keep articles for future reference, but because I just don't have room to collect magazines I tear out the articles that interest me and collect them all in a binder that I call my reference binder. I know I can always find whatever I am looking fro here all organized by dividers and collected in plastic page protectors!!!!
Leave me a comment below on what you think or what you are making and reading this week.

Another Weekend Gone!!!

Well we went into the weekend with big plans!!!! We just got a huge lot of antique horse harnesses that we are going to reuse and repurpose into other wonderful things, we had plans to pick up a new dairy goat that just lost her kid, and a male potbellied pig to have as a breeding partner for my beloved Priscilla!!!! With all those plans and so much to do and create...........we all got sick!!!!!!!! 2 adults and 5 kids all laying around the house suffering from cold symptoms, coughs and high fevers. We did nothing but whine and complain to each other comparing who felt worse.... I still say it was me because sick or not mommy still needs to take care of everyone, cook and clean... not to mention be the only one who couldn't take any medication due to pregnancy!!!! I win hands down!
Hopefully the week gets better... quickly

Yarn Along

Joining with Ginny for the first time, I am having a blast crocheting up 80 of these little bookworms, they are bookmarks that my kids will be handing out for Valentines Day. They crochet up in just a few minutes each and once I glue some googly eyes on them the kids should love them! I find them a little more meaningful than traditional store bought cards. I will repost a picture of them when they are all done, they really are quite cute.

I really enjoy reading but can never seem to get settled into a book, I just cant devote the time. So I find magazines a good fix, I can read just one article at a time and they are very educational, this week I am reading a new edition of one of my favorite magazines, The New Pioneer, it is loaded with great articles to help us learn about becoming completely self sufficient.

What are you creating and reading????
